Gary Chen
Gary is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry, where he is advised by Prof. Cherie Kagan. His research focuses on using optical spectroscopy to expand understand how defects, spin texture, and topological electronic structure influence the photophysical and catalytic properties of quantum materials for sustainable energy applications. Gary graduated with honors from Penn State University in 2023 with a B.S. in Chemistry.
Gabriela Gomez-Dopazo
Gabriela is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, where she is co-advised by Prof. Daeyeon Lee and Prof. Kathleen Stebe. Her research explores bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels as templates for tri-continuous carbon electrodes for electrochemical energy storage. Gabriela graduated from the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey in 2023 with a B.S in Chemistry.
Jacob Kelber
Jacob is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry, advised by Prof. Karen Goldberg. His research focuses on developing molecular precious metal catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of methane to methanol. This research involves the study of C-H activation by organometallic complexes and reactivity of organometallic complexes with molecular oxygen. Jacob graduated from Harvey Mudd College with a B.S. in Chemistry in 2023.
Will Presson
Will is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, where he is advised by Prof. Karen Winey. His research focuses on characterization of the morphology and transport properties of precise ion-conducting polymers. Will graduated with highest honors from Emory University in 2024 with a B.S. in Physics and a minor in Spanish.
Bo-Hyung Ryoo
Bo-Hyung is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry, advised by Prof. Christopher B. Murray. His research broadly investigates how composition, surface chemistry, and nanoscale structure govern the behavior of colloidal nanomaterials, with current work on rare-earth-based nanocrystals for anti-Stokes fluorescence and optical refrigeration. Previously, he conducted industrial research in South Korea on water purification and plastic recycling. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.
Kathleen Segal
Kathleen is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry, where she is advised by Prof. Monica McCallum. Her research centers on the development of sustainable methodology for organic synthesis using microbial enzymes. Kathleen graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 2023 with a B.A. in Chemistry.
Rebecca Jiuhe Shi
Rebecca is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, advised by Prof. Samantha McBride. Her research focuses on understanding and controlling interfacial transport and crystallization phenomena in microfluidic and porous systems for sustainable environmental technologies, including nutrient recovery from wastewater and carbon storage through mineralization. Rebecca graduated from Beijing Jiaotong University and Lancaster University with dual B.S. degrees in Environmental Engineering and earned an M.S. in Carbon Management from Columbia University.
Jeehoon Shin
Jeehoon is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry, where he is advised by Prof. Thomas E. Mallouk. His research focuses on developing inorganic hydroxide-ion conductors for anion exchange membrane fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Jeehoon received his B.E. in Organic and Nano Engineering from Hanyang University (Seoul) and his M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from KAIST (Daejeon).
